If you have a few minutes, you should check out this slideshow Slate has by curator Mia Fineman about The Art of the American Snapshot, at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. And if you don't have a few minutes (like me), do it anyway (like I did)...it's both entertaining and a succinct little history of amateur photography in America, and the professional world it was often reflecting.
