Photo Contests: Approaching Deadlines

I once again have a small glut of notices in my "photo contests" folder, and figured it was time to unload them on the public consciousness.

First up, the Al-Thani Award for Photography, which is funded by Sheik Saoud Al-Thani from Qatar. The press release is given over to an endearing level of hyperbole, but with a $50,000 cash prize and Leica M6 as awards, it's not so far off to claim that "never before so much prize money has been rewarded in one single photo contest." And runner up prizes are pretty respectable too. Entries will be accepted in a no-theme category and this year's themed category, "water." The majority of past winners have come from Qatar, surrounding countries, and Europe, but that seems like a good reason for some Americans to break in this year. Entry deadline is November 5.

Follow the link for information on many more contests.

Next we have another big prize--in a slightly more literal way. The Hasselblad Masters Award considers images in nine categories by established photographers using any large- and medium-format cameras (in past years, only those using Hasselblad were considered). With past recipients such as Albert Watson and Patrick Demarchelier, this prize is out of reach for many photographers. But this year, a new category is open to professional photographers regardless of the length of time they've been in the business or the camera format they use. And all winners receive the use of Hasselblad's full H3D digital camera system for two periods during the year. Entry deadline is November 1.

This year's National Photo Competition by the Advertising Photographers of America begins accepting entries tomorrow, April 17. Images will be considered in nine categories, including student, for which there is a discounted entry fee. Winners are promised prizes including equipment, software, and a spread in Rangefinder magazine plus inclusion in a gallery at PhotoPlus Expo 2007 in New York in October. Entry deadline is September 17.

Corbis is launching a brand new photo contest, in partnership with the Golden Drum Festival, a European advertising conference in Slovenia in October. The winner will receive a 5,000-Euro prize for photography used in any campaign that was created for use in Europe. Entry deadline is August 31.

And just for fun, the International Norton Emoticon Photo Contest asks entrants to upload photos of faces mimicking emoticon faces. Grand prize is $10,000 with five $1,000 first place prizes. Entry deadline is October 15.

Iz

It's al-thani photgraphy contest, not photography contest.

I entered the Althani photocompetition with deadline September 2007. Up to now I have had no acknowledgement that my entry and payment was received, nor did I see or read anything about the outcome. Where can I find this information? Thanks

Where can I get this info?
