Magnum photos at the Gramercy Park Hotel

The hottest hotel in New York has discovered photography. The brand new Gramercy Park Hotel  has partnered with Magnum Photos, adorning each of its rooms with images from the Magnum archive. This must be some kind of marketing milestone for Magnum, which apparently isn’t your father’s photo agency anymore.

The Gramercy Park is the latest hotel from Ian Schrager, who’s best know for launching the Morgan and other ultra-chic, modernist hotels featuring interior designs by Philippe Starck. For his latest creation he turned to artist Julian Schnabel, who redesigned the famed Gramercy Park Hotel with an artful diversity that some critics have called “bohemian-chic.” Included is work by the likes of Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and Damien Hirst.

Magnum says that many of the photographs found in the hotel’s rooms are on view for the first time. I wish I could afford to stay there for a night or two to check them out. At any rate, congratulations to Magnum New York director Mark Lubell for putting his agency on the chic side of town.—David Schonauer
